Williams F1 are a team that is in desperate need for some racing direction to get their project back on track. And what better than a former F1 champion’s advice to guide one of the most dominant teams in the sport’s history?
The British outfit created quite the buzz when they recruited Jenson Button in a senior advisory role. Speaking in an interview, management personnel Simon Roberts and Jost Capito opened up about what Button brings to the table.
Roberts said, “Because of the corona crisis, Jenson has not yet been able to come to England.
“But of course we exchange ideas and he supports us in many ways, for example by advising the board of directors and the management team.” (translated via Google Translate)
Jenson Button has always been an ‘expert in racing’, praised Capito
“As soon as we start racing again, he can come and help on the track. One of his ex-race engineers is with us, so it’s a really great collaboration that connects us.”
Button is, of course, no stranger to Williams, having made his Formula 1 debut with the team back in 2000. From there on, he went on to accumulate a wealth of experience and trophies, which will hold him in good stead when advising the likes of George Russell and Nicholas Latifi.
Capito added his thoughts, “It’s great to have him on the team, just to talk to him. You can get a second opinion like that.
“He is very professional, he became world champion, he has driven various racing series – and he has always been an expert in racing. It’s great to have a sparring partner like him.”
Williams will hope to pick up some F1 championship points in 2021
It is not a secret that the Grove-based outfit are taking the longer route here and waiting for the 2022 regulations. That represents the best chance for all ten teams to structure their processes and deliver results in the new decade of F1 racing.

But for the time being, their focus will lie on achieving at least a single point from the 23-race season. Russell, in particular, looks incredibly promising for the assignment, and so could well help the team avoid the wooden spoon in 2021.
