Unfair to label Leclerc error prone after France crash, says Binotto

The Monegasque driver was leading early on at Paul Ricard and, with better tyre degradation than main rival Max Verstappen, looked to be fully in control of things.
However, a mistake on lap 18 pitched him off in to the crash barrier – forcing him out on the spot and opening the door for Verstappen to take a win that further extended his championship lead.

10 things we learned from the 2022 French Grand Prix

Paul Ricard might have been sweltering as the mercury climbed to 35 degrees Celsius, but from lap 19 of 53 in the French Grand Prix last Sunday, Max Verstappen barely had to break a sweat to chalk his seventh victory of the 2022 Formula 1 campaign.
While nearest title rival Charles Leclerc held track position early on after landing pole, the Austrian GP winner bottled the chance to convert it …Keep reading

Vettel: Stroll braking at final corner of French GP “caught me by surprise”

The Canadian meanwhile said he “didn’t do anything reckless” as the pair battled for 10th place and the final point.

ETCR: Azcona crowned King of the Weekend in Vallelunga

ETCR: Azcona crowned King of the Weekend in Vallelunga

Sport news

Azcona took his first King of the Weekend win as his Hyundai Motorsport N squad were victorious for their first weekend too as they overtook Romeo Ferraris in the standings after a weekend that promised much for the local squad but ultimately delivered a very different weekend than that expected.

Azcona scored the perfect weekend 100-point tally, but he was put under pressure in his Pool FAST DHL Super Final as Romeo Ferraris driver Bruno Spengler pressured him hard alongside down into T1. Azcona ultimately prevailed on that lap and Spengler would subsequently spin out of the race in spectacular fashion, ending his day with a visit to a local hospital for precautionary checks. His Giulia ETCR needed only a brief evaluation to rule it out of further action for the weekend, meaning Maxime Martin’s hitherto perfect points run in Pool FURIOUS could not continue in that DHL Super Final, and the squad also opted not to run Giovanni Venturini either.

The depleted field meant a sparse final Final of the day, with Nicky Catsburg looking to continue Hyundai Motorsport’s fine run until his tyre gave up its battle with a handful of corners left to go, gifting the win to CUPRA’s Mattias Ekström.

Leaving Vallelunga, CUPRA EKS continues to lead the Manufacturers’ standings with 876 points to Hyundai Motorsport N’s 629, whilst Adrien Tambay leads the drivers with 435 points from Ekström on 421 and Azcona on 368.

“This is an incredible feeling. I have wanted to achieve this result with Hyundai Motorsport for a long time this season, and we have done it here in Vallelunga – the place where I took my first King of the Weekend crown,” said Azcona.

“It is a very positive moment, we have made a good improvement as a team and maximised everything from the car. I think we have plenty of opportunities ahead of us in the next events to fight for this result again. Thank you to my team for working so hard every single day – what an amazing weekend.”

Did an FIA glitch cost Perez a podium in France?

But it could have been an even better day for Red Bull had Sergio Perez not missed out on a podium after he was overtaken by Mercedes’ George Russell in the closing stages.
Perez was left frustrated after the race, claiming he had received “totally wrong” information regarding the Virtual Safety Car restart, which Red Bull said was due to a “glitch” from the FIA.

Hamilton: Nothing Mercedes could do to fight Verstappen for French GP win

Mercedes arrived at Paul Ricard hoping to take a step forward to compete with Red Bull and Ferrari at the front of the pack, only to finish eight-tenths of a second off pole position on Saturday.
But Hamilton made a good start to rise from fourth to third before then taking second place when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out while leading, sparking a safety car period.
It left Hamilton …Keep reading
