Following the Bahrain Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton tested COVID positive. Although he had won the first round of the middle eastern triple header, he had no clue what followed. Now, after missing the Sakhir Grand Prix, an enormous cloud of mystery looms over his Abu Dhabi race.
Although the Briton’s health had not deteriorated, the infection of the virus drains a person of his energy. Lance Stroll may have been back within a week of being infected, yet it fatigued him. It took him a while before he could regain his form.
Hamilton is extremely health conscious and maintains a healthy lifestyle. So the virus will not cause him any grievous or fatal damage. Yet F1 demands absolute fitness, both physical and mental. That may be too much to ask from the 7 time world champion at this moment.
“There are still some question marks over who will be in the car this weekend in Abu Dhabi. Lewis’s condition is improving, but we won’t know until closer to the time if he will be driving,” remarked Toto Wolff.
Lewis Hamilton missing Abu Dhabi-Second chance for Russell
In the unlikely case of Lewis having to sit out even at the last race of this season, it will be a carnival for George Russell. Hamilton’s compatriot rendered a phenomenal performance at Sakhir, last Sunday. Unfortunately, luck did not favor him and he eventually finished P9.
Although Hamilton is hinting at a steady recovery every day, his Sunday is still at stake. Toto Wolff described that his racer’s health is of prime importance to him. Thus it is still uncertain whether he will make it to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“We’ll do everything we can to get him in the car, and we know he’s determined to be back as soon as possible. But his health is our main priority, so we will see what the situation is and then make the call,” concluded Toto Wolff.
The Mercedes Boss has always stressed at the well-being of his crew. Be it his engineers, or his racers, or his crew, every member is equally important to him. He knows that the team might again lose out on precious points but having already secured title; he does not worry much.
George Russell will have a golden opportunity if Mercedes calls him again for the Abu Dhabi race. Failed to secure the podium, he will have another shit at it in the Mercedes AMG. However, will fate favor him this time or would it play another nasty trick with him. Well, we will have to be patient for that.
