The domination of Mercedes over the last seven years have made the sport of Formula 1 quite predictable. The F1 Commission has discussed introducing the sprint race format this season, which is expected to make the weekend more interesting and allow for the grid to get on a level playing field.
Some have welcomed this suggested change to F1, while others believe that this is an unnecessary step. The Red Bull drivers, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, gave their opinion on the sprint race format.
Verstappen shared his skepticism over the format and said, “It’s not necessarily about [having] more racing. I quite like doing a one-and-a-half hour race because if we have good cars we can race closely and of course more teams are able to fight for victory, you don’t need sprint races.
“I think we don’t need to really mix it up that much, the whole programme. We don’t need to mix it up that much to see a fight for the win,” stated the Red Bull driver.

Perez warns F1 on similar lines as Max Verstappen
Sergio Perez is replacing Albon to help close Red Bull’s gap with Mercedes. It is essential for the Mexican to live up to the Milton Keynes’s expectations. Like Verstappen, he also believes sprint race format is not necessary and warned F1 about the same.
“I don’t know what to expect, really. How it will change the programme once we’ve done it, I don’t know. I think for me the most important thing is that Formula 1 remains with [its] DNA. I think it’s a very thin line. It’s a bit risky,” said the Mexican.
A reverse grid format could help Red Bull catch up to Mercedes. However, it can also make them susceptible to other teams that are trying to climb the championship. The details of the format are yet to be finalized and approved. Do you want to see a sprint race format this season?
