Santiago Urrutia topped the times in Free Practice 2 at WTCR Race of France as the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup field continued to acclimatise to Circuit Pau-Arnos ahead of Qualifying.

Cyan Performance Lynk & Co driver Urrutia recorded a time of 1m19.295s to head Néstor Girolami’s ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR by just 0.047s.

The top 17 were separated by less than a second in the 30-minute session, with four of the WTCR’s five customer racing brands making it into the top 10. Yvan Muller, fastest in the first session, was third quickest this time in his Cyan Racing Lynk & Co. He was just ahead of fellow Frenchman Nathanaël Berthon in his Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport RS 3 LMS.

Norbert Michelisz was fifth fastest in his BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse Hyundai Elantra N TCR, with Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Yann Ehrlacher sixth. The other Lynk & Co of Thed Björk was seventh, with Tom Coronel (Audi), Gabriele Tarquini (Hyundai) and Frédéric Vervisch (Audi) completing the top 10.

Gilles Magnus battled back from a couple of excursions off track, including a trip through a gravel trap, to end up in P11. He headed the first of the Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competicións of Mikel Azcona. Jean-Karl Vernay (Hyundai), Attila Tassi (Honda) and Esteban Guerrieri (Honda) completed the top 15.

Qualifying at WTCR Race of France is due to start at 16h00 local time.

Yvan Muller set the pace in the first free practice session at WTCR Race of France as the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup made its debut at Circuit Pau-Arnos.

The Frenchman set a time of 1m19.747s to head fellow Lynk & Co driver Thed Björk by just 0.112s, with the top 18 cars separated by less than a second around the 3.030-kilometre circuit.

Jean-Karl Vernay was third fastest in his Goodyear-equipped Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team Hyundai Elantra N TCR, ahead of Esteban Guerrieri’s ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR. Fellow Honda driver Attila Tassi was fifth with Santiago Urrutia and Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Yann Ehrlacher completing a strong session for the Lynk & Co 03 TcRs in sixth and seventh.

Norbert Michelisz set the eighth fastest time in his BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse Hyundai, with Frédéric Vervisch the fastest of the Comtoyou Team Audi Sport entries. Mikel Azcona recovered from a high-speed spin at the esses that make up Turns 1 and 2 to round out the top 10 in his Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición.

Néstor Girolami was P11 following a front-left puncture, while Luca Engstler was P12 after running off the course and up a grass bank in sector two. Nathanaël Berthon (Audi) was next, from Tom Coronel (Audi) and Rob Huff (CUPRA).

The second free practice session of WTCR Race of France is scheduled to start at 13h00 local time.

Thierry Neuville won all three of Saturday morning’s speed tests at RallyRACC Catalunya – Rally de España to stretch his lead to almost double figures.

The dominant Belgian, who was fastest in Friday’s final three special stages, stretched his unbeaten run with a masterful drive on smooth and flowing roads in the Costa Daurada hills to increase his advantage over Elfyn Evans to 9.0sec.

The Hyundai i20 pilot continued to fight against understeer and fog in the opening Savallà test, but nobody had an answer to his pace as he strives to secure back-to-back victories in Spain in this penultimate round of the FIA World Rally Championship.

“It wasn’t an easy start with fog moving through the stage and the road was really dirty,” he said. “I didn’t expect that. We tried to have a clever approach and avoid the sharp edges and the cuts on the last stage. We’re still working a bit on the set up. We could go faster if we weren’t struggling with the understeer.”

A self-critical Evans blamed himself for not being committed enough in the opening Savallà and reflected on set-up changes made for today’s more flowing roads.

“I just didn’t quite click with the feeling of the car,” said the Welshman. “We made some subtle changes to try to improve it but I’m not sure it was the correct direction. It wasn’t so different, but I struggled to find the sweet spot we had yesterday. Running at the back now we get more dirt and I think that suits us less than the conditions yesterday morning.”

Championship leader Sébastien Ogier hung onto third in another Yaris, but Dani Sordo was doing all he could to unseat the Frenchman. The gap between the pair dwindled to just two-tenths after a strong morning for the Spaniard as drivers returned to service in Salou.

Ogier was unhappy with the way his Yaris behaved in corner cuts but acknowledged that he must raise his own performance and take more risks to keep Sordo behind.

Kalle Rovanperä remained fifth in another Yaris, the gap from Sordo increasing to 21.5ec. The young Finn punctured in the middle Querol – Les Pobles test but was glad to still be running. “I had a huge moment in the last stage – maybe one of the biggest I have ever had. We were lucky to escape,” he explained.

Adrien Fourmaux was sixth in a Ford Fiesta, the Frenchman second fastest in Querol – Les Pobles but it wasn’t such a good morning for team-mate Gus Greensmith. He punctured in El Montmell and conceded more than a minute to drop from seventh to ninth.

His problem promoted Oliver Solberg and Nil Solans, competing in a World Rally Car for the first time, to seventh and eighth in i20s. FIA WRC2 leader Eric Camilli completed the leaderboard in a Sports & You-entered Citroën C3 Rally2.
