The FIA and iRacing are pleased to announce the creation of the FIA F4 Esports Global Championship, which will commence its inaugural season this September. The all-new, pro-level Esports series is the latest step in the successful partnership between the two parties around the Formula 4 platform. The four-event, eight-round series will see drivers from around the world battle for a $25,000 prize pool. Races will be broadcast live across iRacing social media channels.

FIA Single-Seater Director, Nikolas Tombazis said: “I am delighted that the FIA is again joining forces with iRacing for the next phase of this highly innovative collaboration, taking FIA F4 Esports to a global stage following great success at the regional level. This latest step in our strong partnership aligns with our strategy to foster the growth and development of Esports and, in so doing, extend the appeal of our sport to fresh audiences, with the aim of doubling global participation in motor sport.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with the FIA to launch the FIA F4 Esports Global Championship,” said iRacing president Tony Gardner. “Both iRacing and the FIA are committed to helping aspiring racers break into real-world motorsport through accessible opportunities, and the Formula 4 platform is a terrific means of doing so. Since the relationship between iRacing and the FIA began in mid-2023, tens of thousands of drivers have taken to the track in the virtual F4, honing their skills as they begin to work their way into real-world racing. Series like the FIA F4 Regional Tours, which focus on tracks within specific regions of the world, provide racers with a sim experience that reflects the start of a racer’s real-world journey. In addition, iRacing has worked with dozens of FIA national sporting authorities (ASNs) to provide account support to sim racing newcomers around the world, as well as helping to create numerous national championship series.

Drivers will be able to qualify for the FIA F4 Esports Global Championship by running in iRacing’s FIA F4 Regional Tour series during 2024 Season 3, which kicks off in mid-June. The top 10 eligible drivers in championship standings across each of the Regional Tour series will be invited to compete in the Global Championship. In order to be eligible for an invitation to the Global Championship, drivers must reside within the respective region for which they qualify, ensuring a truly global championship field.

Doubleheader events have been scheduled for September 14, September 28, October 12, and November 2, with the first race session opening at 18:30 GMT. Track selections for each event will be announced 24 hours prior to the race, forcing drivers to adapt quickly to each course. Drivers will also compete with fixed setups, ensuring an equal playing field for all.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will return to China for the first time in more than five years this weekend (25-26 May), as Shanghai prepares to welcome the all-electric single-seater series for a potentially pivotal double-header duel.
 
Formula E’s story began in China back on 13 September, 2014, when the inaugural E-Prix was held on the streets of Beijing. Just under a decade on, competitors are preparing to tackle the Hermann Tilke-designed Shanghai International Circuit, which opened in 2004 and whose layout has been slightly modified for the championship’s visit.
 
Only three drivers on the grid for that maiden race in Beijing are still in action in Season 10, with Lucas Di Grassi taking the honours in the Chinese capital in 2014, Sam Bird joining the Brazilian inside the top three and Sébastien Buemi prevailing 13 months later. The trio now compete respectively for ABT CUPRA Formula E Team, NEOM McLaren Formula E Team and Envision Racing.
 
It is Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy, however, who tops the classification heading to Shanghai, after putting some breathing room between himself and his rivals in Berlin earlier this month courtesy of a pair of podium finishes including the seventh victory of his increasingly impressive career.
 
The New Zealander has reached the rostrum on all-bar three occasions from the opening ten rounds of the campaign, affording him a 16-point advantage at the summit of the standings with just six races left to run.
 
TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein is currently Cassidy’s closest threat – and a consistent front-runner and podium contender – while British duo Oliver Rowland (Nissan Formula E Team) and defending title-holder Jake Dennis (Andretti Formula E) are similarly in hot pursuit.
 
Rowland – who rejoined the fray in January following half-a-season on the sidelines – has been a revelation, and would likely be leading the way had it not been for a technical issue that denied him a double triumph at Misano in Italy. Dennis, for his part, is bidding to become just the series’ second two-time champion after Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Penske). The Frenchman, incidentally, is the only other driver to have previously triumphed in China in Formula E, pipping pole-sitter Rowland to glory in Sanya five years ago.
 
One spot above Vergne in the chase for the coveted crown in fifth, Mitch Evans – winner in Monaco last month for Jaguar – might be trailing stablemate and countryman Cassidy by 43 points, but the former championship runner-up is very much in the fight and can never be discounted.
 
Maserati MSG Racing’s Maximilian Günther and 2019/20 champion António Félix da Costa (Porsche) have also sprayed victory champagne in Season 10 – the former producing an energy-saving masterclass in Japan and the latter ending a 20-race winless run in commanding fashion last time out in Germany. Both will have their sights set on conquering more silverware in Shanghai.
 
It is a home event, meanwhile, for ERT Formula E Team, who will be keen to mark the occasion with a suitably strong performance. Sérgio Sette Câmara has finished inside the points three times so far in 2024, with team-mate Dan Ticktum placing a career-high fourth at Misano. Rookie racer Jehan Daruvala (Maserati) will likewise be looking to build upon his best result to-date after taking the chequered flag seventh in race two in Berlin.
 
Round 11 of the campaign will get underway at 15:03 local time (09:03 CEST) on Saturday, 25 May, followed by round 12 at the same time on Sunday, 26 May.

Ahead of the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix, Porsche AG and Porsche Motorsport alongside the FIA and Formula E have confirmed Porsche’s registration to continue to be a manufacturer in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship from Seasons 13 to 16, committing their involvement until at least 2030. 

This decision ensures that the Stuttgart-based sportscar manufacturer will be on the grid when the next generation of vehicles, known as GEN4, debuts in the all-electric racing series. GEN4 will be introduced in Season 13 (2026/2027), offering manufacturers valuable insights for their series production.

Other technology promised in the revolution GEN4 era will be focused on significant breakthroughs in energy efficiency, race performance, and safety standards. This next-gen platform will introduce features such as regeneration capacity reaching up to 700kW and a power output surge up to 600kW. 

The announcement also follows commitments from both Nissan and Jaguar as manufacturers in the GEN4 era – accelerating the momentum that is set to make the GEN4 era the fastest and most exciting yet.
