The unique essence of the Macau Grand Prix has always been to bring the top junior drivers from around the world together to compete in a one-off ultimate challenge. The event has historically been a rite of passage for some of the sport’s greatest talents, and in 2024 the next chapter of that history will be written in the FIA FR World Cup.
The switch to Formula Regional cars has been driven by a number of key factors that relate to the global landscape of junior single-seater racing. Today, the position of FIA Formula 3 has changed in the wider framework of championships, and now within the FIA single-seater pyramid the Formula Regional category essentially occupies the same position as Formula 3 Championships have done in the past.
Formula Regional Championships – Certified by FIA, are a high-level platform that represent a key step for young drivers who are gearing up for global competition, while FIA Formula 3 now occupies a space above as an international series that supports Formula 1 races and has one consistent grid of cars.
Formula Regional has already cemented itself as a vital stepping stone for future stars. Former champions such as Frederic Vesti, Dino Beganovic and Kimi Antonelli have already gone on to great success in more senior categories, and a host of Formula 1 driver development programmes feature the category in their progression pathways, including the Alpine Academy, Ferrari Driver Academy, McLaren Driver Development Programme, Mercedes Junior Team, Red Bull Junior Team, Sauber Academy and Williams Driver Academy. With such attention from the very pinnacle of motor sport, there’s no doubting the importance the FIA FR World Cup will hold in the landscape of junior competition.
When looking at maximising the appeal of the FIA FR World Cup, we considered the benefit that there are multiple Formula Regional competitions taking place across Asia, the Americas, Oceania, the Middle East and Europe, providing a wider pool of potential drivers and teams who could compete in Macau.
Finally, in terms of car performance, Formula Regional cars are well suited to the challenges of Macau’s incredible Guia Circuit. They are similar in performance to the FIA Formula 3 cars of the previous homologation cycle – there have of course been many different iterations of junior single-seater car that have raced in the Macau Grand Prix, and we are confident that the FIA FR World Cup will provide another thrilling spectacle when the cars take to the track in November.

CALLIN TOP FUEL FAVORITE
With reigning champion Ida Zetterström moving across to the US-based NHRA Drag Racing Series, last year’s runner-up Susanne Callin is the main contender for the title in the fastest and most powerful of classes.
2017 Top Fuel title winner Duncan Micallef is back for a full season this year, while the extremely quick Swiss racer Jndia Erbacher should also be a force to be reckoned with, however only planning a partial campaign this year.
TOP METHANOL’S FUNNY CARS AND DRAGSTERS
Will a funny car come out on top once again or will the dragsters prevail? That will once again be the question in the class where funny cars and dragsters compete against each other. Sandro Bellio, the 2019 and 2022 champion, is ready to bounce back following a troublesome campaign last year.
At Santa Pod, the Belgian’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo funny car will meet strong competition from three dragsters. A-Fuel Team Sweden entered the series with two cars for Jonny Lagg and Tony Bryntesson, while Silvio Strauch will go for his second full season in the championship.
FULL PRO MODIFIED FIELD
David Vegter, who finished the 2023 season on a high with his first win at the European Finals and a runner-up position in the championship, will be one of the main favorites to the title. The Dutchman has been consistently quick for several years now and came close to the European ET record last season.
Another man to watch should be Andres Arnover. The Estonian and his turbo-powered ’67 Ford Mustang GT500 finished in third position last season, while Bruno Bader came fourth. The Swiss Pro Mod veteran aboard his Gotham City Corvette is a proven top-three finisher and should also be in the mix for the top spots.
PRO STOCK IS BACK
The Pro Stockers skipped the season-opening round last year, but now the factory-based hot rods are back with an eight-car field. The top six of last year’s championship standings will take on the title fight this weekend.
Reigning champion Michael Malmgren will meet hard competition from the two Dodge drivers, 2023 runner-up Stefan Ernryd and third-best driver of 2023, Simon Ekengren. Robin Norén, last year fourth in the standings, had a busy winter as the team had to repair the Pontiac GXP after the crash at the Hockenheimring.
A major threat will surely come from Jimmy Ålund. The 12-time class champion only took part in the two Tierp races last year and finished the championship in fifth position. This season Ålund is back for a full campaign with only one goal – to retake that number one spot.
Qualifying for the FIA classes will kick off on Saturday and will continue on Sunday, while eliminations will follow on Monday.
