George Russell delivered a stunning display of speed to seize pole position for Saturday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a dramatic Q1 exit after hitting the barriers.
Russell had looked ominously quick throughout Thursday’s practice and turned that promise into his fifth pole of the season at Baku, producing a final 1m42.526s that left Charles Leclerc second and Oscar Piastri third.
The result was made all the more striking by Mercedes’ contrasting fortunes. Antonelli clipped the inside barrier at Turn 1 during Q1, damaging the front-left suspension and bringing his qualifying to an abrupt end. Although his earlier lap was sufficient for Q2, he could not continue and will start no higher than 16th.
Russell leaves rivals scrambling
McLaren briefly threatened to spoil Russell’s party when Piastri and Lando Norris jumped ahead during the opening Q3 runs. Piastri’s 1m43.571s initially looked like the benchmark, but Russell immediately demonstrated there was another level available.
The Mercedes driver found around half a second on his second attempt, setting a 1m43.037s lap that already put him comfortably clear.
He then somehow found another five-tenths on his final run.
The resulting 1m42.526s was untouchable, leaving the rest of the field to fight over second place.
Ferrari adopted a different approach, holding Leclerc back until later in the session. The gamble paid off as the Monegasque secured second, finding another tenth on his final attempt. But he remained eight-tenths adrift of Russell.
Piastri completed the top three, with Isack Hadjar making an impressive return from injury by qualifying fourth.
Norris could only manage fifth after making a mistake on his final run, ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly. Max Verstappen was eighth after yellow flags caused by Norris’ off compromised his final effort.
Carlos Sainz rounded out the top nine, giving Williams another encouraging result from its heavily revised FW48, while Franco Colapinto took 10th after a turbulent Q3.
Williams delivers as Audi suffers
Russell had already topped Q2 with a 1m43.462s lap, two-tenths ahead of Verstappen, but the fight for the final Q3 places was considerably tighter.
Williams’ upgraded car proved capable of joining that battle, with Sainz making the cut. Colapinto then snatched the final spot from Haas’ Oliver Bearman in the closing seconds.
Liam Lawson was the biggest casualty, qualifying 12th for Racing Bulls, followed by Williams’ Alex Albon and Haas’ Esteban Ocon. Arvid Lindblad’s difficult weekend continued with 15th.
The high-speed Baku layout also exposed Audi’s power deficit, with Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg eliminated in 17th and 18th.
The four Cadillac and Aston Martin drivers were also knocked out in Q1, although Alonso and Stroll were already facing back-of-the-grid penalties following Honda power unit changes.
For Mercedes, however, the story could hardly be more dramatic: Russell starts from pole with a crushing advantage, while championship leader Antonelli faces a long recovery drive from the back.
